Three moments a day belong to you.

So there are exactly three candles. Three scents for those three moments — and three colours, so you know them in the dark without reading a label.

Why only
three candles?

We started with the question backwards: how many moments in a day actually belong to you?

Count them. There are three.

  • dawnbefore anyone needs you.
  • duskwhen the work goes quiet for a minute.
  • latewhen the room is down to the sound of your own breathing.

So there is no twenty-scent collection here. Three candles, for those three hours, each a different colour of wax — so you reach for the right one without turning on a light to read a label.

Three recipes, ordered again when they run out, instead of a fourth one added every season. Some weeks that means a colour is gone and you wait for it. It also means the person who answers when something goes wrong has these same three candles on a shelf at home.

Three is enough. More than three is just making you choose.

THREE.

Dawn, Dusk, Late.

Same wax, same wick, same glass. Three things change: the scent, the colour, and the hour you reach for it.

  1. 05:30

    01

    DAWN

    Morning Clarity

The smell of a page with nothing on it yet.

    Top
    White tea
    Heart
    Bergamot
    Base
    White cedar

Burn it before the light is fully up, before anyone needs you. White tea opens almost silently, bergamot lifts the air, white cedar leaves something dry behind it. Nothing sweet in this one — mornings don't need sweet.

DAWN — Morning Clarity, a soy candle in a sand vessel

    Sand · 14 oz

    $30

  2. 17:00

    02

    DUSK

    Evening Serenity

Late sun holding on a brick wall.

    Top
    Ripe fig
    Heart
    Amber
    Base
    Sandalwood

Burn it when the work goes quiet but the day isn't finished. Ripe fig is warm and slightly opaque, amber slows everything down, sandalwood sits still underneath. This is the candle for the gap between two things.

DUSK — Evening Serenity, a soy candle in a terracotta vessel

    Terracotta · 14 oz

    $30

  3. 23:00

    03

    LATE

    Midnight Calm

    The city has gone quiet.

    Top
    Lavender
    Heart
    Vetiver
    Base
    White musk

Burn it when the room is down to the sound of your own breathing. The lavender here isn't the spa kind — vetiver drags it back into the ground, dark and a little damp. White musk closes it, thin as a sheet. Forty minutes, then out before you sleep.

LATE — Midnight Calm, a soy candle in a indigo vessel

    Indigo · 14 oz

    $30

Why scent,
and why only three.

Smell gets there first

Sight and sound are routed through the thalamus before you know what they are. Smell is not. The olfactory bulb wires straight into the amygdala and the hippocampus, so a room can change how it feels a beat before you have named what you are smelling.

That is the entire mechanism, and it is why a scent lands on a bad evening when a playlist does not.

We are not selling medicine

Lavender is the most studied aroma in this area and the reviews are broadly encouraging, but the trials vary a great deal in quality, and a jar of soy wax on a shelf is not a clinical dose of anything.

So we will not tell you that Late treats anxiety. What it does is mark the end of a day. That is a smaller claim, and it is one we can keep.

Three is the point, not the limit

If you have already made two hundred decisions before lunch, a wall of forty scents is the two hundred and first. Three is not a small range. It is a routine.

One for the hour before anyone needs anything. One for the gap between work and evening. One for after the house has gone quiet. You stop choosing and start using them.

On the olfactory pathway: Harvard Gazette and The Neurobiology of Olfaction. On lavender: a 2019 systematic review of the randomised trials, including its own caveats about their quality.

Identical in every other way.

The three candles differ in scent and colour. Everything else — wax, wick, vessel, method — is the same.

Burn it properly

  1. First burn, give it 3–4 hours so the wax melts all the way to the edge. A jar this wide tunnels for good if you cut the first burn short.
  2. Trim the wick to ¼ inch before every burn. A long wick makes black smoke.
  3. Never burn more than 4 hours straight. Snuff it — don't blow it out.
  4. Stop when ½ inch of wax is left. Below that the glass gets too hot.
